Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers

Injectable fillers, also called dermal fillers or soft tissue fillers, can be used to plump lips, smooth wrinkles and folds, add volume to the cheeks, and fill in the under-eye hollows known as tear troughs. Hyaluronic acid is the most popular FDA-approved filler ingredient, but fillers can also be made of collagen, calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, polymethyl methacrylate, or fat that’s harvested from your own body. Alora Wellness & Spa offers a variety of dermal fillers in Eugene, Oregon including JUVÉDERM® Collection of Fillers (JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC, JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC, JUVÉDERM® VOLLURE™ XC, JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC, JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC), Restylane Kysse, and Restylane Lyft (scroll down to see each individual use).

About Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are used to “re-volumize” areas of the face that have lost their volume. The goal of injectable dermal fillers is never to morph your face into something it was never meant to be. Instead they are used to enhance your natural beauty and to recreate fullness in areas that have gone “flat” or thinned or lost their definition with age.

Why Dermal Fillers?

  • Injectable treatments are quick, relatively painless, and safe when done by a licensed practitioner. They’re nonsurgical and noninvasive, so they require minimal downtime.
  • Hyaluronic acid fillers are nearly identical to what’s produced in our bodies, so it dissolves more naturally over time than other ingredients.
  • Hyaluronic acid fillers can be easily reversed with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down HA, if you don’t like your results.
  • Dermal fillers can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years depending upon a variety of factors.
  • Dermal fillers are considered safe, but side effects can occur. Such side effects include redness at the injection site, allergic reaction (especially with collagen), granulomas (hard lumps under the skin), bumps, bruising, or asymmetry. Side effects are rare. For a full list of side effects click here.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid, or HA, is a natural substance in the body that delivers volume to the skin. Spoiler alert—the name is somewhat of a misnomer, because hyaluronic acid actually isn’t an acid at all. It’s a complex sugar, a polysaccharide molecule that’s naturally found in both our skin and other connective tissue in the body. Naturally occurring hyaluronic acid decreases both with age and due to exposure to UV rays and environmental pollution.

What are the different types of dermal fillers and what do they do?

  • JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC injectable gel is for deep injection in the cheek area to correct age-related volume loss and for augmentation of the chin region to improve the chin profile in adults over 21.
  • JUVÉDERM® VOLLURE™ XC, JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC, and JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC injectable gels are for injection into the facial tissue for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. JUVÉDERM® VOLLURE™ XC injectable gel is for adults over 21.
  • JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC injectable gel is for injection into the lips for lip augmentation and for correction of perioral lines in adults over 21.
  • JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC injectable gel is for injection into the lips and perioral area for lip augmentation in adults over 21.
  • Restylane Kysse is the first lip filler designed with XpresHAn Technology™ for flexible movement and natural-looking volume proven to last for up to 1 year. Enhance texture and color of the lips while maintaining a full range of expressions.
  • Restylane® Lyft is a safe, effective and dissolvable HA filler. The first and only hyaluronic acid filler FDA-approved to treat your face and hands in the same appointment — and can result in a more youthful-looking appearance.

What to expect from a Dermal Filler appointment:

During your first visit, FNP-C April will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment areas for you. Your specialist may numb the area with a topical emulsion prior to injections. Because most fillers contain Lidocaine, a numbing agent, most patients report little discomfort. You will have minimal downtime, but it is very common to see mild bruising and swelling at the injection site after your treatment. Avoid sun, heat, workouts, and alcohol for 24 hours; these side effects should clear up within a few days.

Avoid alcohol, aspirin, some supplements (high-dose vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and garlic) or other blood-thinning medications for a week or two prior to your appointment, to minimize bruising. Alora Wellness & Spa recommends arnica gel or cream, to reduce pain and swelling.

You’ll see more fullness or smoother skin immediately or within a couple of days, but it can take up to two weeks for the swelling to fully subside.
