Microneedling with PRP/PRF: Does it Make a Difference?

Mar 05, 2024
If you want younger-looking, radiant skin, chances are you have invested in skin care lotions and serums and checked out potential treatment options, such as microneedling. While this treatment option on its own works to turn back the clock, what if there was something else that could offer a boost to your body’s regenerative power and significantly improve the results seen with microneedling alone?

The fact is, you hold the key to these powerful boosts in your own body. Platelet-rich plasma and platelet-rich fibrin, paired with microneedling, can take your skin rejuvenation game to the next level.

What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as percutaneous collagen induction therapy, is a skin treatment that involves the use of a handheld device that uses tiny needles to deliver micro-punctures to the skin. These punctures help trigger a process known as dermal remodeling. The tiny needle injuries cause the body to increase collagen and elastin production while also releasing growth factors and cells to generate new tissue. This helps address concerns such as lines and wrinkles, acne scars, and enlarged pores.

What is PRP and PRF?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) are two similar treatments that harness the rejuvenating powers within your own body. Both PRP and PRF come from your own blood. Before treatment, a small amount of blood is removed from a vein. The tube of blood is then spun in a centrifuge, separating the different components within the blood and creating a product that contains a mix of platelets, white blood cells, growth factors, and, in the case of PRF, the protein fibrin.

The main difference between PRP and PRF is the extraction process and resulting product. PRP involves the addition of additives and chemicals that thin the blood. While PRP does offer benefits, PRF is now considered the gold standard, as it does not require additives and delivers many more growth factors than PRP.

PRP or PRF with Microneedling
While microneedling alone is a powerful treatment for facial rejuvenation, adding PRP or PRF to your treatment further enhances your final results. For example, a 2016 study looked at the difference between microneedling alone and microneedling with PRP in the treatment of atrophic acne scars. The results showed that microneedling with distilled water showed a 45.84% improvement while microneedling with PRP showed a 62.20% improvement.
