If you’re planning to get BOTOX® here at Alora, you may be wondering how soon you can get back to your normal routine. While there’s no formal downtime after injectables like BOTOX or Dysport, there are a few guidelines we ask our clients to follow in order to get the best possible results. One of those guidelines is around holding off on strenuous exercise temporarily. Here’s why.
How BOTOX Works
BOTOX works by temporarily relaxing the underlying facial muscles that cause expression lines like forehead creases, frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet. Directly after your treatment, the medication stays localized in the targeted muscles. Over the next several days, it gradually begins to reduce movement in those areas, which softens the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Because this process takes time, what you do immediately after your appointment can affect how well the treatment settles. Following aftercare instructions, such as limiting strenuous exercise, helps to optimize your BOTOX results.
Why You Should Wait Before Exercising
Our experienced BOTOX providers generally recommend avoiding exercise for the first 24 hours after BOTOX. Strenuous activity increases blood flow and circulation throughout the body, which can increase the chance of swelling or bruising and may slightly affect how the product distributes in the treated area. Taking a short break from workouts helps the product stay precisely where it was placed.
During the first day after your BOTOX appointment, we recommend avoiding:
- Running or cardio workouts
- Weightlifting
- Yoga positions that place your head below your heart
- High-intensity interval training
- Saunas or hot yoga
Light daily movement such as walking is generally fine. The goal is simply to avoid activities that significantly raise your heart rate or increase pressure in the face.
When You Can Return to Your Normal Routine
For most people, it’s safe to return to regular exercise the day after treatment. By that point, the product has had enough time to settle into the targeted muscles. Resuming workouts after 24 hours typically doesn’t affect your results.
While exercising too soon after BOTOX doesn’t usually ruin your results, it can increase the chance of temporary side effects like bruising or swelling. In rare cases, increased circulation immediately after treatment could allow the product to shift slightly from the intended area. This is why waiting just one day is recommended.
Getting the Best BOTOX Results
After your appointment, a few simple steps can help you get the most out of your treatment:
- Stay upright for several hours
- Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas
- Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Follow your provider’s specific instructions
Otherwise, you can expect to resume your normal daily routine right after your BOTOX appointment. Just keep these small tips in mind to help you see the best possible results.
